Sample Procedures

Creating & implementing useful procedures is a pillar of successful classroom management. Here, I have created a sampling of procedures that demonstrates my understanding of young learners, their need for visual cues, reinforcement & explicit direction. These procedures, while nonspecific, can be modified to fit almost any classroom setting.

Procedures:

At the beginning of the school year, proper hallway behavior will be discussed and modeled. In discussing community, we will talk about being respectful to the school community through hallway behavior.

2. Handing in & distributing papers

Students will be shown the turn-in trays at the beginning of the school year, and it will be explained how to separate worksheets by subject. Proper procedure for handing out papers will be demonstrated and explained at the beginning of the year. Students will practice with feedback until mastered.

3. Classroom jobs

Once a firm routine has been established, classroom jobs will be introduced. A board with all the jobs listed will be placed on the wall. When introducing this, all job expectations will be throughly explained. Students will be paired up for optimal working conditions - this accounts for absences or confusion. New jobs will be chosen bi-weekly, during morning meeting. The teacher will randomly select names and place them on the job board via wooden clothespins. After recieving a new job, students will be instructed to "go to their business meeting" to shake the hand of the person they will be working with, in order to foster classroom relationships/teamwork.

4. Managing Materials

Materials will be kept in one central location of the room. Pencil cups filled with pencils, markers and pens will sit in two rolling carts that can be moved around the room as necessary. Containers of additional art materials: glue, glitter, scissors, construction paper, etc. will also be placed on the carts. Discussions about sharing and proper tool handling will happen at the beginning of the school year and as they are needed for projects.

5. Out-of-class

At the beginning of the year, students will be introduced to the out-of-class markers that will hang by the exit. Students are permitted to leave for the bathroom two at a time, unless there is an emergency. An additional marker will hang from the teacher's desk to indictate the student has been given permission to leave the classroom for some other purpose.
